Night at the Tavern Empty
PostSubject: Night at the Tavern   Night at the Tavern Icon_minitimeThu Aug 23, 2012 2:31 am

The night was cool outside the old brick and thatch tavern, which made Rohesia glad she was inside. She sat half the room away from the fireplace that sat at the north wall of the room. Near the fireplace were two nice and comfortable sofas along with a coffee table. Tonight, the sofa seats were occupied by two half-drunken soldiers, wailing something about some of the more popular city gossip. Rohesia, not in the least bit intrigued at the men's drunken words, remained seated at the tavern's bar, a dark cloak wrapped around her shoulders and falling down the back of the barstool, just barely sweeping the floor.

"Another glass, miss?" the barkeep asks her, tapping his foot on the rickety wooden floor and making her take notice of her glass. Her glass was just about empty and with only a second of reluctance, she nodded and let the man refill her glass for the fourth time that night. For Rohesia, the tavern wasn't just an escape, but also where she got many of her jobs. It only took her hearing the right conversation or picking up even the tiniest bit information from someone's mind for her to have her next mark. However, she'd been here for almost five hours now and with no results. Maybe another tavern would be better, she thought, taking a small sip of her drink before scanning the room again, seeing a few more men joining the crowds around the tables. This wasn't unusual. Most of the weeknights, men gathered around the table, gambling away their money on silly card games.

Rohesia smiled, remembering how easy cheating in those games actually was. She'd done it a few times in her past and had gained a good profit off each match. However, after a while, the games had bored her and she quit. Taking another sip of her drink, she turned back to the bar and sighed, keeping her ears open for even the smallest word that would lead her to her next mark.

Faine slipped into the brick tavern quietly among a small crowd of incoming men and pulled her hood down, allowing her hair to fall around her shoulders. Tonight she had transfigured herself into a short and slight but pretty blonde woman of about 20 who she had glimpsed earlier in the streets. It was always more interesting to disguise yourself as someone who actually existed rather than inventing a whole new appearance. After a quick glance around the bar to be sure that no one she knew was here, Faine relaxed and wandered over towards a group of men playing cards and slipped her hand into the pocket of a jacket hanging carelessly over the back of a chair and pulled out a silver coin, smiling slightly to herself as she did so. People were so careless with their things sometimes, she thought, it wasn't surprising that people like her could make their living solely off of taking other's people's things.

She walked up to the bar and sat carefully on a seat near the end, facing slightly away from the bar in order to watch the other people around her. Not much seemed to be going on tonight other than the usual gambling and pointless chatter, however Faine didn't really have anywhere else to be. She decided to simply sit and wait for a while, and maybe another handsome man would offer to buy her a drink or she would see someone carrying a nice new dagger she could slip away with.

Night at the Tavern Empty

Rohesia heard the doors of the tavern open and felt the chill of the night on her back. She knew another group of men had wandered in, hoping to join the games or get a few drinks. Nonetheless, Rohesia casually turned to check out the group, only to be surprised by the sight of another woman. Women didn't typically come to the taverns this late at night, not unless they were a bar wench that was. This woman didn't look like a bar wench. Bar wenches didn't sit at the bar and didn't look at men so straightly or so...

There wasn't really a word that came to mind that accurately described it, but Rohesia knew the look. It was the look of a thief searching for her next mark. How Interesting, Rohesia thought, a small smile sliding across her face. She was suddenly intrigued with the thief, wondering just what she was planning. Carefully, Rohesia reached out with her mind, lightly touching the thief's mind telepathically and not caring to wait for an opening. She didn't go deep enough into her mind to examine her thoughts, only to connect and speak.

"I'd be careful what you steal, thief." She said telepathially, mind voice dark and warning. "There are men here that don't take lightly to pick-pockets." Looking down the bar, Rohesia gave the thief a casual smile, acting as if the warning had not even taken place. Setting another tin coin on the counter, Rohesia ordered herself another beverage, before turning back to the room. The men across the room were arguing again, one man accusing the other of cheating. The childish fight only made Rohesia smile with amusement, which continued only after the losing party--the man who'd accused the other-- was fed up and flipped the table in a fit; gold, silver, bronze and tin coins scattering all over the floor.

Glancing toward the thief, Rohesia smiled. "If you're going to act, you should now before anyone notices." She said and stood to her feet, nonchalantly and walked to the very edge, picking up a few of the coins, before returning her attention to the fight again.

While Faine was sitting and looking around the bar, she suddenly heard a voice in her mind, warning her about stealing. Faine jumped and quickly began looking around the bar for the source of this telepathic voice, thinking it must have been someone she knew. Her eyes fell on another girl with brown hair who was smiling at her. But why would she be warning me off? I don't even know her, thought Faine.

She swiftly got up off of her seat and walked to the edge of the room to see if any more dropped coins remained on the floor. Her eyes fell on a bronze coin and a few tin coins laying on the ground that no one had picked up yet. Faine quickly swept them up as she walked by. She knew none of the men would notice. They never did. Right now, they were still busy arguing pointlessly over whether or not any cheating had taken place. As she watched, the man who had won the money finished gathering up the fallen coins and the losing party stormed out in a rage. Faine smiled slightly and returned her attention to the man who had won that money. By the end of the night, all those coins could be hers if she wanted.

Rohesia watched the woman with amusement for just a few minutes, smiling as the men quieted for a moment and then started up the same drunken chatter as if nothing had happened. That's what she always loved about men. They never seemed to be effected long after a fight, unlike women. Women always seemed to hold grudges or thought about something they'd seen for hours. "Not many fights happen in here," she said to the woman, shoving her hands into the pockets of her trousers and giving a slight grin as she watched the men set up another game, "I'm not sure how much luck you'll have getting any the way you just did." She glanced over at the woman again, "So unless you're up to gambling with them, you'll be out of luck."

Satisfied, Rohesia ordered another drink from the barkeep and took it gratefully as it came. Sipping it, she watched the next game, ears open for any chatter, but finding none that was worth her attention. "Tonight is a slow one," she said more to herself than to the woman. "No one but the barkeep and the gamblers have had much luck with money tonight." Rohesia smiled, touching the money pouch in her pocket, the contents lighter than she was used to. I better find a mark soon, Rohesia thought with a frown. Otherwise I'll have to get money the hard way.
